Dress Code

All students are expected to wear dress appropriate to the occasion; extreme or ostentatious apparel or appearance is to be avoided. Any article of clothing or accessory or tattoo which advertises alcohol or an illegal substance, depicts lewd graphics, displays offensive or obscene language or is gang-related is forbidden. Student dress that disrupts the school environment will not be tolerated. Dress standards shall be set by the principal. {S. B. Policy 5-41/Rule 5}.

The First Colonial High School dress code is established to promote a positive self-concept, instill discipline, avoid safety hazards, and prevent disruption. Modesty, cleanliness, neatness, and appropriateness are the standards which should be observed by all students in their personal dress and grooming. The following guidelines are established to assist students in achieving these goals. If there is doubt about a particular item, the student should contact a school administrator PRIOR to wearing the clothing to school. If an administrator deems a student’s dress inappropriate and the student does not modify the attire, entry into the classroom may be delayed or denied and discipline consequences assigned. The following list is not inclusive and will serve as an example of possible infractions.

• Students must wear appropriate footwear at all times. Slippers are not permitted.
• Pajamas and pajama bottoms are not permitted.
• Clothing that overexposes the body and/or undergarments are unacceptable (midriff and cleavage may not be exposed). No crop tops, see-through, or mesh clothing.
• For males, tank tops/basketball jerseys are not permitted. Females must have a shoulder strap with a three-finger width.
• Chains may not be worn as adornment to clothes, nor should any student carry a chain.
• Bandannas, hats, visors, caps, hoods, wave caps, scarves, and other head coverings may not be worn in the building (unless related to a religious practice or for a medical purpose and approved by the principal).
• Shorts, skirts, and dresses worn to school must be of an appropriate length that reaches the fingertip when the student’s arms are extended equally down to the side.
• Athletes must wear outerwear that meets dress code expectations during school hours (use of warm ups or other cover ups).
Additional dress guidelines may also be requested in specific classes. Students in violation of the dress code guidelines will be required to change clothes to meet school standards. Violation of the dress code guidelines may result in disciplinary action as specified in the Code of Student Conduct.
